What's Up, West County!

September 2025

Community Messages from the Superintendent

Read Superintendent Chris Meredith's messages to the community about Attendance Awareness Month and Fentanyl Awareness Month.

In October, the District will host fentanyl awareness training for each of our high schools, along with a video screening and panel discussion, which will be open to the West County community. We hope you join us in learning life-saving skills to keep ourselves and our community safe.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is a national celebration honoring people born in-- or with ancestors born in-- Spanish-speaking countries. It is celebrated yearly from September 15th-October 15th, a 30-day period in which 8 Spanish-speaking countries celebrate their independence.

See below how Latin Americans celebrated their independence this month:

  • Claudia Sheinbaum's historic recitation of El Grito as Mexico's first woman president

  • Costa Ricans participate in a lantern parade the night before Independence Day

  • Chilean cueca performed at Fiestas Patrias

Analy High School

September marked the first meeting of the CTE Advisory Committee. This committee is comprised of various educational partners and is a requirement for the Proposition 2 Grant. If awarded, this grant will help to offset the construction costs of the CTE building, preserving Measure A Bond monies which can then be reallocated to future projects. This timelapse shows the progress of the CTE building construction.

On September 19th, educators from around the county met for a forum to discuss their work with the College and Career Access Pathways program with the SRJC. This convening illustrated how Analy is a leader in this work throughout the county, highlighting the work of teachers, Heidi Mickelson, Jim Baptista, Mei Ibach, Stacy Fortin, and Courtney King.

Laguna High School

Last night, Laguna families congregated in the library for Student Showcase Night. They got to see what their students are learning, met the teachers, and enjoyed some light refreshments prepared by the culinary class.

Earlier this month, Laguna had their first Attendance Recovery and Tutoring session. These sessions provide students with the opportunity to make up missed class time with the additional support they need to achieve their academic goals!

In the quad, Mr. Shaw's gardening elective prepared planter boxes and planted trees at the El Molino Campus. The trees are drought-resistant, making them a sustainable source of shade.

Academy of Innovative Arts

This month, AIA students took a field trip to Game On, a Berkeley-based entertainment center. There, students had access to 6 custom-built game rooms where they worked in small groups to take on the challenges.

Earlier this week, AIA welcomed international visitors from Shanghai and Copenhagen. While here, the visitors shared about their work in Human-AI collaboration and innovative teacher education. They enjoyed a tour through the maker space and learning more about AIA's program.

AIA students also started their first community project --building food lockers for Bullfrog Pond Campground.
